Moose Mix

Spinnerty posted this mix by his friend Moose. Some pretty sick stuff. I think this mix would fall under the category of "broken beat" but that's something Spindiddly would be able to answer better than I could.

Hoo hoo! Like a search owl

Have you ever heard a song and been reminded of other songs? Some folks have created a new type of search engine which allows you to upload your favorite song and then analyzes the frequencies and characteristics of the song in order to provide similar matches. I tried it on a few tracks and sometimes it is pretty close. It's a fun way to search for similar sounding music or audio samples, and makes you wonder what it is (sonically) that makes songs unique.

Try it out on the OWL search site. It references mostly creative commons licensed works.

Konono N°1

"KONONO N°1 was founded over 25 years ago by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likembé (a traditional instrument sometimes called "sanza" or "thumb piano", consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator). The band's line-up includes three electric likembés (bass, medium and treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from old car parts, and plugged into amplifiers. There's also a rhythm section which uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans, pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers and a sound system featuring these famous megaphones."

More Coltrane

This is an interesting Giant Steps visualization. It's reminiscent of the moving shapes and colors that I might visualize when listening to it (albeit much more blocky and more varied colors).

Mastering Mos' Album

So after 5-6 years, my friend Moses is finally releasing his debut album. Mos is an emcee from chicago/chambana. Once upon a time we lived two doors from each other in our freshman college dorm. When I sent out my first call to work with emcees in Champaign, he was one of the few people who actually responded and was interested in doing something. We've worked on a few tracks over the years and even done some live performances together. At any rate, he's been working on putting out an album for quite a while now, and today we will be sitting down to do some of the final mixing/mastering before calling it finished. Production was done by myself, Spinnerty, and various beat grabs Mos found (some more recognizable than others). Check AMS out on Myspace.

Olivia Tremor Control

Olivia Tremor Control is a band that has one foot in 60's psychadelic rock, and the other in indie rock (they still sound fresh after 10 years). Part of the elephant six collective, you may be more familiar with one of their members, Jeff Magnum, lead singer/writer for Neutral Milk Hotel.

This is one part of the song series "Green Typewriters" (I say part because this is really one track split up into 10 parts) from the excellent album, Dusk at Cubist Castle (1996).

I remember hearing O.T.C. a long time ago in high school after my friend kaveh let me borrow their CD. Recently I've gotten into them again.
